The economy is changing the way I spend. With my hisbands job being commission based, we have less income coming in. We will make more items ourselves, by generics, and get what we need, not what we want.

My personal shopping habits are definitely changing this holiday season. I’ve committed myself to giving mostly handmade gifts and not getting caught up in the commercial insanity this year. Interestingly, as I plan and make gifts I find that I’m looking forward to the holidays much more than usual this year…in my mind the feeling is comparable to leaving rush-hour freeway traffic in favor of a relaxing drive on a two-lane country road. Guess it’s true that every cloud has a silver lining! :)

  5. Bodynaturalsoap Says:

My spending habits are changing this season for two reasons. First is I am spending more on gas and other items, and have a little less disposable income. The other reason is more personal in that My 5 yr old is getting a little spoiled and materalistic so I am going to have him do some voluntering with me and we are going to do with fewer gifts.

I am making a special trip out of town to visit my whole family this year. I have not seen them in over 3 years all together, and this years holidays will include a ton of personalized handmade gifts for all of them! :)

I am getting back into soaping after taking a break. I have been busy making soaps, candles, body butters, etc. I am planning on giving gift baskets for Christmas as funds are tighter this year. We are all spending more for fuel and food. I am not a shopper either. I hate to waste time wandering around the malls. If I can’t find it online these days, I am not buying ! Thanks for the opportunity.

The economic crisis has killed my business – literally. I just shut down the website yesterday. I am so lucky that this was not my sole source of income!

As for Christmas, we are doing a lot of theme baskets and handmade gifts this year. We are also staying home instead of traveling, which will be VERY nice :)

well honestly bad as it sounds to say this I happen to benefit when the economy is bad. I work in foreclosure stuff(when the bank is selling to a new owner). I have been soo busy at work the last 2 years, but I can say I have seen a slow down in our business in the last 1.5 months or so which means even now people are picking up the great deal houses.

In my business where I notice the problems is with buying supplies as the suppliers have all had to raise the prices on everything. I use to get a block of paraffin wax for about $7 around 3-4 years ago and when I picked up a block the other week it was almost $17! that is a large jump in price. Even things like shipping are up. I can’t believe how much it costs to ship a few bars of soap now at the post office. I feel bad but you then have to pass the costs down and if the customers don’t have as many $’s around then your sales will be down. Going to be very interesting to see how this holiday season goes. Many are reporting being up in sales so far, so fingers crossed that keeps up for everyong else.

  10. Karin Says:

The economy has me limiting what I make and how much I order in supplies. I don’t have a business yet, fewer supply orders means less research and more care with what I have as well as more concern for minimizing waste. I am also making most of my Christmas gifts instead of buying them.

My friends, family, and I must live in a bubble, because we aren’t really noticing any effects from the current economic crisis.

We were just sitting around talking about that last weekend.

Gas is finally going down here, and when prices were high we didn’t take as many trips, but that’s the only effect I’ve seen.

We normally only buy for the children, parents and siblings in our extended family, so my personal shopping habits won’t change.

Here in the UK things have increased in price very noticeably. Where I didn’t bother to check too much before, I now find I’m comparing prices all the time – and the amount the prices vary is scary!

By the way, I love this blog and thanks for the giveaway opportunity! :o )

Thanks for hosting this sweepstakes. The crisis has diminished our retirement savings and net worth by at least 30%. This means that we now have to save more to try to re-coup some of the losses. also, with the instability in the markets globally, we are spending on what we absolutely need & trying to get things on sale.

Wow! What great prizes. I have recently discovered the blogs of others since I now have a soap obsession and I have to say I love blogs too.

While I have always been a conservative spender. I have found that I am taking much more time to compare pricing regarding such daily items like groceries, gas etc. Now that gas is down some I can say that I feel some relief but, I don’t think we’ll see the price of milk, eggs, and other basics that rely on being shipped going down. Too bad!

    You’re wonderful, Marr!

Since we’re just getting started in business, I can’t really say how the current economic crisis com is affecting it. As for spending habits, combined with other personal factors, the poor economy is making us downscale gifts for the kids at Christmas (we’ve been downscaling a bit every year for a couple of years now anyway). As well (as I’ll be mentioning in my blog later), I’ll be doing one of those “buy nothing” experiments for a few months come the new year. Even before the downturn, we’ve looked to the book Your Money or Your Life as inspiration.

That said, when I do buy things, I like to support small businesses and local businesses, as well as the organic and fair trade ideals.

Ok, off to post about your giveaway on my blog and Twitter! :) Thank you!!

With ever rising prices– I am trying to use what I have before buying more supplies- and keeping better records to do so. Also- I have been going more “green” in an effort to make my little corner of the world more earth friendly.

I love to re-purpose, re-use (shipping packing) etc. when at all possible.

Many a little crunch in the economy can be a very good thing in so many ways- in other words- think of the positive effects and be proactive on what would be best for the business, community, and our mother earth…

This economic downturn has hit my business VERY hard, and I wasn’t big to begin with. I’ve had to reach out and look for other ways to market my product and see if that will help. Here’s to hoping. I did start a blog and that does bring in more traffic to my site, so that helps. I think it’s going to be a hard season for everyone, especially those of us who are small businesses.

The economic crisis hasn’t affected me. Shopped till I dropped yesterday. :)

But I am upset that I just never got around to taking advantage of those low stock prices we had for a while. :(

Thanks for the contest. So far the economy has not effected me. I am a full time graduate student and I live in University subsidized housing. I also walk to work/school so I hardly ever use my car (which is paid off). So the only thing that could really effect me is food cost, but since I by mostly local/organic food I am already used to the high prices.
