Gift Cards and Deadlines
I read an interesting article this morning on Lifehacker about gift cards and deadlines. The article points out that people are more likely to use gift cards if they expire quickly. Now as a business honoring those gift cards, you may not care if they redeem them or not. You’ve already made the sale. But there are several reason you should care. One reason is that the recipient, having tried your products, may convert into a regular customer. Secondly, the person that sent the gift will get much more satisfaction if the recipient tells them that they used and loved your products. If giving a gift card to your shop was successful, the giver will be more likely to send them as gifts again.

They don’t say what is considered a short deadline. Do you think that 6 weeks is too long? Two weeks too short?
I’m actually doing up some freebies for a local mothers day show and have coupons in there, I never thought to have an exp date on that, which is an excellent idea.
I know myself, when I have a valuable coupon with a short exp date, I am more likely to use it asap.

Good question! I myself think 2-4 weeks would be the most effective. If recipients are able to use the cards on your web sit – then 2 weeks is plenty of time. I’m interested in what others think about this.
