Awareness Test

I read Seth Godin’s Blog regularly. Some of you may read it as well. Yesterday he posted a video that I would like to share and discuss here. Once you’ve watched the video - come back and read the rest of the post. If you’ve already seen it - read on.

This video gives us much to think about. It offers great insight into how we design our Web sites and our advertising and where we use that advertising. There are multiple lessons we can take from this and I’ll write a series of posts on each of those lessons.

The main lesson I took from the video is that visitors to our Web sites are capable of and will focus on any ball we ask them to. The narrator asked us to count the number of times the ball was passed by the players in white and we did such a good job of it we missed everything else that happened in the video. How did he get us to focus? By giving us a job to do and by doing so, we had to participate. He was also very specific as to what we should do which made the job easy to accomplish.

With some effort and creative thinking we can get our site visitors to focus on what we’d like them to. Quizzes, Polls, Graphics, and even trivia can get their attention and ask them to interact with your web site.

Another lesson this video teaches us is that your message can easily get lost in all the noise surrounding it. It’s hard to get a customer to focus when there is too much going on. Clear the clutter from your site so they can. Remove anything that doesn’t reinforce or compliment the message you want to be received.

If you design your site or ads with these lessons in mind, you will be more successful in getting your message across. Carefully planning and testing on family and friends will help you get there.
